Are people fickle or just blinded by hype? I remember last year when Modern Warfare 2 was released that the whole world went crazy, reviewers were calling it the greatest game of all time and players were convinced of the same. But just a few months later the fuss had died down, in fact, people were complaining about the buggy and hacked multiplayer mode and a single player campaign that was too short. Sonic the Hedgehog games are usually a fine example of how solid ideas can be ruined by stupid gimmicks. Look at Sonic Unleashed, which is 50% the best 3D platform game ever made and 50% an absolute nightmare, filled with ridiculous werehogs and terrible Devil May Cry Junior gameplay. What would happen if you took that good half, buried the bad half in the desert, and gave it a gimmick that actually worked? Sonic Colours would happen, that’s what! For me the Need for Speed games have always been about the Hot Pursuit side of things ever since I played it on the PSOne and really enjoyed chasing down racers as a cop or trying to get away, avoiding helicopters, road blocks and spike traps. All the other spin-offs haven’t really done it for me so I was excited to play this latest Hot Pursuit title, especially as it’s developed by Criterion, the same people behind the sublime Burnout games.
