Sony’s making bold claims that sales of its Playstation 3 jumped 130 percent over Christmas. Quite what that means in actual sales I’m not sure. Sony’s hit hard times due to the weak pound against the Yen, but the good news is, the PS3 won’t rise in price as a result. Now at a very reasonable price for a multimedia console with Blu-Ray, it’s good to know it’s even a bit cheaper in the UK now VAT’s at 15%. UK Sony boss Ray Maguire’s kicked up a fuss by saying soon, developers will see the PS3 as the lead platform and downgrade games to fit on the Xbox 360. Could this be the case? Or could it be wishful thinking? Only time will tell.
There could be a smaller and slimmer PS3 on its way next year. Thanks to new technologies in making a smaller, cooler, less power-hungry Cell processor, we could see it being shrunk. Just don’t expect a leap in size similar to when the PS2 was remodelled. Related: PS3 slim
Sony’s Playstation Dualshock 3 controller has arrived at a price. Rumble firm Immersion have been ordered to pay Microsoft over $20 million after Sony licensed the technology for use in their vibrating controllers. The updated PS3 model with a 80 Gigabyte hard disk and a Dualshock 3 controller is being released Friday 22nd August at £299.99. This model doesn’t feature the backwards compatibility or memory card readers found in the previous 60GB model, but an extra 20 gigs is probably more useful than the ability to play old PS2 games.
