The Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone Expansion review

I’ve sort of finished The Witcher 3. By that I mean I’ve done the entire story, ridden around looking for extra things to do and have a couple of broken quests I can’t actually finish that I’ve had to just give up on.

Hearts of Stone gives me more things to do in Geralt’s playground and this one revolves around visiting a manor full of supernatural people who, to begin with, want help with killing a massive toad-type thing. I don’t want to give away any spoilers but once you defeat it, you’ll fall further into the rabbit hole alongside other side quests that involve investigating a murder, putting pay to a load of Fisstech cookers akin to something out of Breaking Bad, assembling a team to perform a heist and an amusing quest involving a ghost that adds some much needed humour into the game.

The expansion is also tough – it opens up new areas for you to explore North of the map and all the enemies both monster and human are above level 30 – this won’t be a walk in the park and I’m level 35! If you’re not quite at that level they also include a way for you to play in stand-alone form where you are given the level and gear to play through the expansion without having to grind.

Also new is the ability to craft runes and glyphs with the help of a Runewright. This way you can forge new, more powerful abilities that should help you with these toughened enemies.

Whether you’ll appreciate this 10 hour expansion depends on how far into the game you already are. I’ve put over 100 hours into the game and was sad to have to stop, so therefore I found it a tough but welcome challenge. Some of you still in the middle of the story and with lots of the map to explore probably won’t see the need to pay for this just yet – it’s not like there is much of extra value to help you through the vanilla game. It’s more great content think of it like a pack of biscuits. That last one will be very much enjoyed but if you’re halfway through the pack, you may not appreciate it quite so much. Hearts of Stone gets a very good 7 out of 10.
