I’ve got Worms. Urgh I hear you all say but you know what I’m talking about, not the ones that sit in your stomach or make your bum itch, I’m talking about Worms with weapons and attitude in Worms Open Warfare 2.
The first game on the DS didn’t quite sit as well as it should have and I actually preferred the PSP version. Luckily, lots more thought has gone into this version so you’ll soon be throwing hand grenades, calling airstrikes and ninja roping your way round the levels in no time and loving every minute of it.
As usual the aim in the main game is to wipe out the other teams, by blowing them up, shooting them, drowning them or sending an exploding sheep out to get them. Strangely, you don’t really need to use the touch screen as the buttons have been configured so well, but the option’s there if you want to. You can view the whole action over both screens or do what I do and use the top screen as an overview map, as you can’t zoom in and out on the DS which is a bit of a shame.
There’s a few new weapons in this game such as the Boomerang and the sentry gun which riddles any Worm foolish enough to get too close with bullets.
It’s also great you can play this with a friend with another DS in the same room but also over Wi-Fi, which really opens this game up as a fantastic turn-based strategy game everyone should own. Your stats even go on a leaderboard so you can show you’re truly the best at commanding your team in Worm War 2.
There are also some great new modes. There’s a puzzle mode where you must get your lone worm to the exit using only the items given to you, and a parachute mode where you must blow on the DS to give the chute lift as you guide your worm round lots of obstacles. You may look silly but it really fels like you’re giving your worm some lift.
I can’t recommend this enough if you like silly multiplayer games. It’s fun, addictive and just the sort of game that belongs on the DS or PSP. It gets a truly excellent 8 out of 10.
