During the mid to late 90’s the Rare’s Donkey Kong Country series were my favourite games. Intense platforming action combined with graphics and music so awesome that you couldn’t believe they were coming out of a 16Bit Super Nintendo. I could also go as far to say that the original DKC was (and probably still is) my favourite 2D platform game of all time, Super Mario purists may scoff but there’s something I really like about the British take on the platform genre. We’ve seen Donkey and Diddy Kong appear on various games for the Wii and DS over the past couple of years but Donkey Kong Country Returns goes back to the days of the SNES classic and brings the platformer right up to date. Now this I did not expect. Retro Studio’s the developer of the Metroid Prime trilogy pull a surprise punch with the return of my favourite Nintendo Platformer (sorry Mario); Donkey Kong Country. After Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare Software I thought there would be no chance of a true sequel to the superb Super Nintendo game series. Your Wii can do more than play Wii Fit and Mario Kart you know. Whilst they are great games worthy of their incredible sales, spare a thought for our lost retro games.
