Best of E3

So a smaller, scaled down E3 has come and gone this year and this time it’s actually been possible to easily pick out the shining gems from all the games on offer without spending weeks trawling through all the information. Here’s my pick of what I’m looking forward to in the coming months.

So let’s cover the big boys. Nintendo showed us Mario Kart for the Wii. Very excited about that and the possibility of playing it with tonnes of players over Wi-Fi. Not sure if using the motion sensor of the Wiimote will be as easy as the usual method of driving your kart and certainly not sure about the steering wheel they showed which your Wiimote plugs into. They seemed very excited about that even though Joytech already have a 3rd party thing out that does the same job.

We also got new details of Metroid Prime 3, with the ability to gesture during the game with the Wiimote to open doors and change your visor function, as well as the ability to lock onto enemies but still aim yourself for more accuracy. Also details of a new Hyper mode which makes Samus Aran more powerful but this can corrupt her.

Microsoft showed off the first single player level of Halo3 which is looking very impressive, especially when it comes to graphics compared to the multiplayer beta. We got to see Master Chief running through lush forests with sun rays beaming through the clouds. Would be a nice walk if people weren’t shooting at you.

For the first time Sony showed us some in-game footage of Killzone 2 on the PS3. Many people watching were annoyed they were watching cut scenes again until it dawned on them it was actually in-game footage they were watching. Could this finally be the killer title for the PS3? We’ll reserve judgement on the FPS until we play it.

And finally, I have to mention the new Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer that just looks awesome. As a fan of the series I can’t wait for this one and it’s going to be interesting to see just how Meryl and Raiden play a part in the game, particularly since Raiden seems to now be some kind of Robot Ninja and gets stabs himself in the stomach with a large sword during a fight with that Vampire guy who looks a bit ‘Desperado’

Unfortunately that’s all the time I have to mention what caught my eye at this year’s event. Of course, if something’s exciting you from E3 let me know what it is and why.
